Copper Naphthenate is a time-tested wood preservative in service for remedial, dipped or brush-on applications since the early 1900’s. Adopted by the American Wood Preservers’ Association in 1949, it is the most common preservative used for brush-on field application.

The AWPA standards were updated in 1989 to include pressure treating of timbers, wood utility poles, lumber, foundation piling, fence posts and other treated wood products. Since then, Copper Naphthenate has been used in timber bridges by the USDA Forest Service and for poles by various utility companies.

The Environmental Protection Agency lists Copper Naphthenate as a general use pesticide. Unlike other restricted use preservatives, it can be used for both pressure treating and sold as a field preservative.

Treated post and stake tests performed by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory show Copper Naphthenate to be equally effective in fighting decay and insect attack as preservatives formerly available from Wheeler.
